Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for January 2025.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months

The new year is here, and Etsy sellers are kicking it off with the usual hopes for better sales but also with growing concerns that sales have taken a steep dive. Every January and February, it’s common to see complaints from sellers about slow sales—claims that orders have stopped, dropped significantly, or are much lower than usual. But numbers don’t lie, and this year’s January report will show that the situation is far from as bad as it might seem.

If we compare January to the previous months, there is a noticeable drop—sales are down nearly 35% compared to December. But let’s not forget that November and December are the busiest months for online sellers, especially on Etsy.

Looking at the bigger picture, if we compare January sales with the previous six months, there’s nothing dramatic happening. Sales may be lower, but they’re almost on par with October—an average month without the holiday rush or major discounts. In short, while January sales are naturally lower than the wild ride of November and December, they’re still comparable to a typical month like October.

Sales on Etsy by category in January

Every category saw a decline in January, which isn’t surprising. However, the extent of the decline varies significantly—from just 9% to as much as 55%.

The steepest drops were in Bags & Purses (54%), Clothing, and Home & Living (50%). Sellers in these categories likely felt the post-holiday slowdown the hardest. On the other hand, the categories with the smallest declines were Craft Supplies & Tools (only 9%), Paper & Party Supplies (14%), and Weddings (20%).

In fact, Craft Supplies & Tools sales in January were even higher than in August. This category often behaves differently from the overall trend—it didn’t experience the same surge in November and December, for instance. The most likely explanation is that buyers in this category are primarily crafters, creators, and other sellers who stock up on materials at different times, rather than during the typical holiday shopping rush.

Sales growth compared to the previous month

The steepest drop was in the United Kingdom, with sales down over 40%. It’s worth noting, though, that UK sellers saw the largest growth in November, so there’s little reason for concern.

U.S. shops also experienced a decline above the platform average, with sales down by 38%. On the other end, Indian sellers had the smallest drop—just 8%. However, they also had the smallest growth in November compared to other countries.

The sales graph for Germany and Canada shows an interesting trend, with Canadian sellers catching up and now performing on par with their German counterparts.

Holidays

With spring approaching, it’s time for Etsy sellers to prepare for several upcoming holidays that can drive sales. St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is perfect for festive products like themed apparel, party supplies, and home décor. Shortly after, Easter (April 20) brings opportunities to offer seasonal decorations, personalized gifts, and fun items for kids like toys and Easter baskets. Looking ahead, Mother’s Day on May 11 is a key date for shoppers searching for unique, heartfelt gifts. Preparing your shop for these holidays can help attract seasonal buyers and boost your sales.
