Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for November 2022.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months

As we all expected and hoped for, November was the most successful month for Etsy sellers since the beginning of 2022. In the last several months we’ve observed a steady increase in the average daily sales in most categories. The sales hike in November, however, is much more significant. In the first days of November, the average daily sales were already growing much faster compared to the previous months. This trend evolved into a more than 70% sales increase in the major Black Friday and Cyber Week sales in the last seven days of the month.

In November, the average daily number of sales on Etsy increased by an amazing 46.6% compared to October. Considering that there has been steady sales growth each month since August, there is no doubt that the late summer and autumn months are the busiest period of the year for Etsy sellers.

Sales on Etsy by category in November

The sales have increased in November compared to October in every single Etsy category. This is the first time in which we see such a ubiquitous hike and is something unlikely to happen again until November 2023.

The biggest increase can be seen in Home & Living and Bags & Purses, where the sales have nearly doubled compared to last month. The sales in several other categories are also well above the average for the platform – Books, Movies & Music (78%), Toys & Games (77%), and Jewelry (61%). This comes as no surprise – the items in these categories are usually very suitable for Christmas presents and most likely many of the buyers have decided to not wait until the last moment to buy gifts for their loved ones.

The sales in the Weddings category have been steadily decreasing in the last few months – mostly because most weddings happen in the spring and summer. However, in November, even this category registered a sales hike of more than 20%. It seems like the big sales events in the month tempted some soon-to-weds to do their shopping earlier.

The smallest decrease can be seen in Craft Supplies & Tools – it is just 15%. This makes perfect sense – most buyers of items in this category are either Etsy sellers or artisans and crafters who sell their products on other channels. Most experienced and successful sellers are reasonable enough to stock up on supplies for their products well before November.

During high-volume selling periods like Black Friday and Christmas, it is very useful to compare your results to your competitor shops. Sales on Etsy by country in November

The country that did the best in November is undoubtedly the United Kingdom. In the UK, sales have increased by nearly 70% compared to October (the average for the platform is 46.6%).

German shops did pretty well too – the average increase for them is 57%. Shops from France, Canada, and Turkey had an increase of 50% on average. Sellers from the United States had a great month too, with an average increase of 48%.

The numbers for Australia don’t look so optimistic. Even though the sales from Australian shops have also increased in November, this increase is far below the average – 36%. This is mostly caused by the lack of any significant boost during the Black Friday weekend. It is not clear why Australian sellers are not successful at capitalizing on the biggest sales event of the year, however, it is something that sellers from this part of the world should definitely think about.

Holidays

Don’t forget that the Christmas sales don’t end after Black Friday. December is also a very active month for Etsy sellers. To get a better feeling of what to expect, you can read our analysis of last year’s December and January sales in this article – https://koalanda.pro/blog/have-sales-on-etsy-really-dropped.

Keep in mind that there are buyers looking for Christmas presents until the very last minute. Make sure to communicate clearly your deadlines as well as the risk of shipping delays. It might be tempting to get as many orders as you can, however, late Christmas presents can be very disappointing for the customers and this will most likely result in bad reviews for your shop. After all, you should aim to have a successful Etsy shop all throughout the year and a few extra sales in December are not worth the risk.
