Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
Even though the business climate and the economy are getting worse in the last months all around the world, things don’t look so grim if you focus on the Etsy marketplace. The sales on Etsy keep growing for the third month in a row. Considering that November is usually the busiest month of the year, Etsy’s sales have all the chances of reaching an all-time high on Black Friday 2022.
The day with the highest number of sales during the last month is October 19th. Surprisingly, this is a Wednesday (normally, the sales are the highest during the Weekend). As we will see below, this increase is not ubiquitous – the sales spike is driven by a handful of countries – the USA, Canada, and Australia. From a category point of view, the spike is visible in most categories.
The average daily sales increase accelerated in October – the increase in October compared to September is 4.4%. For comparison, the increase in September compared to August was 4.0%. October is the strongest month in the last three quarters.
Sales on Etsy by category in October
The sales in October have increased in 12 out of the 15 Etsy categories.
The categories with the highest growth are Home & Living (14%), Books, Movies & Music (11%), Toys & Games (10%), and Bath & Beauty (8%). These are exactly the categories of items that are most suitable for Christmas presents, so we expect that their rapid growth will continue in the next few months as well.
In contrast, the Clothing and Electronics & Accessories categories have a slight decrease of 1-2%. This decrease is insignificant so we wouldn’t worry too much about it.
The Wedding category has a record drop of 20% on a monthly basis. As we shared in our September report this is expected – few people are getting married in the winter. We expect that this trend will continue in the next few months, although Black Friday might skew the overall monthly numbers.
The sales in most categories accelerate in the last ten days of October. Two categories break this rule – Clothing and Accessories. The average daily sales in both categories have decreased by 12-15% in the last week of October. We will monitor closely whether this trend will continue in November as well.

Sales on Etsy by country in October
As we already mentioned, there was a significant sales spike in the US on October 19th. You can easily see the same spike in the graphs for Canada and Australia below. In contrast, in countries like the UK, France, and Germany there is nothing like that, and October 19th is just a normal business day like any other.
Even though in September the sales from Australia slightly decreased, in October they started growing again. The same is true for Canada, where the increase is a remarkable 14%.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in October
182,646 shops were registered on Etsy in October. This number is about 6% higher than the number of new shops in September.

November and December are the two months of the year that every Etsy seller is eagerly waiting and preparing for. This is true for the buyers as well.
