Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
Just like last month, we start this month’s Etsy sales report with some positive news. The trend of sales increase which started at the end of July continues all through September as well. The September sales are higher than the ones in August, just as we expected and hoped for.
The sales hike is lower compared to the one in August – about 4% compared to 7% in the previous month. Nevertheless, the trend is clear and it is hard to imagine that October will not be much stronger.Iif we examine the numbers from the last six months we will notice that September is the month with the most sales. Considering the overall economic uncertainty and the fact that there might be a recession right around the corner, we think that the 4% increase is very encouraging and overall positive news.
Sales on Etsy by category in September
The sales in September have increased in 10 out of the 15 categories compared to August.
The sales increase has accelerated even more in the Clothing category and in September it is at 17%. The hike is almost as impressive in Pet Supplies (13%), Shoes (10%), and Art & Collectibles (7%). The number of sales has surged in most other categories as well – Accessories (6%), Craft Supplies & Tools (6%), Books, Movies & Music (6%), Bath & Beauty (5%), Home & Living (5%), and Toys & Games (4%).
The most significant drop is observed in the Weddings category – over 14% compared to August. This is easy to explain and the sellers from this category most likely already expected this drop – there are many more weddings in the warm months of the year compared to the colder ones. Most likely this drop will continue in the next few months as well.

Sales on Etsy by country in September
The sales increase for the US-based shops is slightly below the average for the entire platform – 3.3%. September brings some good news for the UK sellers as well – the downward trend for UK sales is over. They have risen by 5% in September compared to August. The sellers from Canada also registered an increase of about 4%.
Australia is one of the few countries in which the daily sales have decreased. After two consecutive months of growth well above the average, in September the sales dropped by 4%. However, the September sales are still higher than the ones in July and the Australian sellers shouldn’t be too worried.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in September
172,710 shops were registered on Etsy in September. This number is about 15% higher than the number of new shops in August.

Holidays
Our analysis shows that September 5 was the day with the highest number of sales for the last three months. This is not surprising – September 5 was Labor Day in the US. As we explained in our August report both Etsy and the sellers run many sales and promotional campaigns on and shortly before the date. Apparently, they work quite well – the sales on this day were 17% more than the average for the month. It is worth thinking about whether you should join the sale campaigns for Labor Day in 2023.
The most important holiday in October is Halloween. The Halloween-related products (costumes, decorations, make-up, etc) will definitely be in high demand all through the month. We are eager to see on our October report what is the actual impact on the sales trends.
Last but not least, don’t forget that there is a little more than a month until the biggest sales event of the year – Black Friday. If you haven’t started preparing yet you better hurry up. You can read this article for useful tips and ideas on how to do it.
