Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for December 2024.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
The new year has begun, and it’s the perfect time to look back at December 2024 and Etsy’s performance during the final month of the year.
After the frenzy of Black Friday, many sellers might have expected a significant drop in sales. However, to everyone’s surprise and delight, not only was there no sharp decline, but December sales on Etsy actually surpassed those in November.
The growth was modest—just under 3%—but it’s still worth celebrating. In 2023, December was a strong month, but it couldn’t quite match November’s numbers. In 2024, however, December managed to outperform November, officially becoming the most successful month of the year for Etsy sellers.
One possible reason for this is that November 2024 didn’t quite hit the same heights as in previous years. Interestingly, the day with the highest sales in the last quarter was December 2nd—Cyber Monday. It’s clear that the shopping momentum from Black Friday and Cyber Monday played a key role in driving December’s strong performance.
The slowest day in December was December 25th, which is no surprise. Christmas is all about unwrapping gifts bought in advance and cherishing time with loved ones—not shopping online.
Sales on Etsy by category in December
Sales by category followed the overall trend, with 11 out of 15 categories showing growth in December compared to November. The biggest increases were seen in Jewelry (16%), Electronics & Accessories (14%), and Books, Movies & Music (10%).
Of the four categories that experienced a decline in sales (Craft Supplies & Tools, Pet Supplies, Toys & Games, and Weddings), the most significant drop was in the Weddings category, with sales falling by over 20%. This is entirely expected, as the Weddings category typically sees seasonal fluctuations, with much lower sales during the winter months compared to the spring and summer.

Sales on Etsy by country in December
The sales data by country shows a wide range of trends. Among the top 10 countries, the results vary from a decline of over 10% in China to a sales increase of more than 10% in Türkiye. For most of these countries, sales dropped compared to November: Ukraine (-3%), Canada (-3%), the UK (-4%), Germany (-6%), and Australia (-7%).
Country | October | November | December |
United States | -4.36% | 45.38% | 7.24% |
United Kingdom | 3.38% | 64.39% | -3.96% |
Canada | 1.23% | 37.06% | -3.42% |
Germany | 0.99% | 52.50% | -5.82% |
Australia | 2.47% | 38.23% | -7.07% |
China | -4.61% | 39.06% | -10.75% |
France | -4.66% | 50.17% | 7.31% |
Ukraine | 1.84% | 35.65% | -3.04% |
Türkiye | 0.65% | 28.22% | 10.13% |
India | -3.72% | 14.66% | 6.04% |
On the brighter side, sales grew in the United States, the country with the largest number of Etsy sellers, by 7%—more than double the platform average. Shops in France (7%) and India (6%) also saw solid growth.
The daily sales graphs for Germany and France over the past three months provide even more insights. Unsurprisingly, the slowest days were around Christmas—December 24th and 25th. However, there was a notable rebound immediately afterward. This is especially clear in Germany, where December 29th recorded sales levels comparable to those in October.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in December
In December, 97,166 new shops were opened on Etsy—nearly 15,000 fewer than in November. This marks the lowest number of new shops for the entire year and the first time the figure has dropped below 100,000. It will be interesting to see if January brings the usual uptick, as many artists are inspired by the new year to embark on fresh beginnings.

Holidays
As we move into February and March, several holidays present opportunities to boost Etsy sales. Valentine’s Day is the standout occasion in February, driving demand for personalized gifts, jewelry, and romantic home décor. It’s a great chance for sellers to offer unique, heartfelt items.
In March, St. Patrick’s Day can spark interest in themed apparel, party supplies, and festive decorations. Additionally, International Women’s Day offers opportunities for thoughtful gifts and products celebrating women.
These holidays may not match the scale of the Christmas season, but with the right preparation, they can still bring a significant boost to sales.
