Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for April 2023.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
In April, average daily sales on Etsy dropped almost 4% compared to March. While March saw an increase in sales for the first time since November 2022, April had fewer sales per day on average than January and February, making it the weakest month for Etsy sales in 2023 so far. But don’t worry too much about this. The differences are small, and there’s no cause for concern. It’s normal for Etsy to have weaker sales in this period.
Looking at the graph below, we can see that April 9th was the weakest day for Etsy in the past three months. Unlike the usual trend of slightly higher weekend sales, buyers were significantly less active on that Sunday, which happened to be Easter, the biggest Christian holiday. Most potential customers were spending time with their families rather than shopping online. Similar declines in sales were also observed during Christmas and New Year’s. In this case, we didn’t notice any significant increase in sales before the holiday. However, the second half of the month looks more promising. We’ll see if the trend continues and if May turns out to be a better month for Etsy sellers.
Sales on Etsy by category in April
Looking at the sales numbers by category, we can see some notable differences in the daily sales for April. Stores selling Bags & Purses, Jewelry, and Shoes saw little to no change compared to March. However, Craft Supplies & Tools, Toys & Games, and Art & Collectibles categories saw a decrease of more than twice the platform’s average, with drops of 9%, 9%, and 8% respectively.
Interestingly, only one category saw an improvement in April compared to March, and that’s the Wedding category. This isn’t surprising considering the weather is getting warmer and weddings are becoming more frequent. As a result, sellers in the Wedding category can expect more success not only in April but also in the upcoming summer months.

Sales on Etsy by country in April
In April, the decline in sales for stores from the United States was half as small as the average for the platform (less than 2%).
Similar declines were observed for sellers from France, Australia, Turkey, and Spain.
However, there was a significant drop in sales for stores from the United Kingdom (over 9%) and Germany (over 10%).
The sales charts for specific countries also show a sharp decline in the weeks following April 9th, Easter. Stores from Germany, France, and Australia sold significantly less around April 21st and 22nd. However, there was a tendency for Australian sellers to increase sales during the last week of April, which was not observed for sellers from Germany.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in April
In April, there were 243,822 new shops registered on Etsy, which is close, but still less than the ones registered in March.

It may seem like it’s too early to prepare for July, but it’s not. The 4th of July is just around the corner, and it’s an excellent opportunity for some sellers, as most Etsy buyers are from the US. If you sell clothes, you might not see a significant impact on your business, but it’s always worth considering. Keep in mind that Etsy buyers aren’t just looking for holiday-themed items.
