Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
Spring has officially sprung, bringing with it a welcome uptick in temperatures and Etsy sales. For the first time this year, our report begins on a positive note: Etsy sales have shown an increase compared to previous months. Even the prior two months weren’t overly pessimistic, with the decline staying within 1%. Nevertheless, it’s heartening to witness sales on the rise, albeit by a modest 1% compared to March.
Moreover, examining the chart of daily sales over the last 3 months reveals that the final week of April stands out as the best for this quarter. We’re hopeful that this marks just the beginning of a trend we’ll observe in the weeks and months ahead.
Sales on Etsy by category in April
This month, the data across different categories reveal diverse trends, with no major spikes or drops compared to the previous month. The most significant decrease is noted among sellers in the Bath & Beauty category, albeit just below 3%. Conversely, the highest sales surge is seen in the Books, Movies & Music, Art & Collectibles, and Clothing categories, all experiencing growth slightly above 3%.
Overall, there isn’t a single category showing a significant deviation in sales compared to March, whether it’s an increase or decrease.

Sales on Etsy by country in April
The sales trends in the USA and the UK closely mirror those of the entire platform. However, it’s evident that sales growth towards the end of the month is significantly more pronounced for US stores than for UK stores.
In the sales graph for France—the country experiencing the largest decline among the top 10 Etsy countries—we also see a slight uptick at the end of the month, though it’s barely discernible. Sales from Germany remain steady, with typical weekend surges.
The graph below vividly illustrates how Chinese stores outpace Indian stores on Etsy in April. While sales from both countries were nearly identical in March, this month sees a nearly 7% surge in Chinese sales (the highest among the top 10 countries by Etsy sales), while sales from India simultaneously decline by over 2%.

Newly opened shops on Etsy in April
Once again this year, we’ve seen a decrease in the number of new shops opening compared to the previous month. This time, the difference exceeds 30,000. In April, there were a total of 121,773 new shops, which is half the number registered in January.
We expect this trend of declining numbers to continue in the coming months. It’s worth noting Etsy’s recent announcement introducing a shop set-up fee of $15 for enhanced security and verification, which will be implemented gradually for new shops.
