Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for March 2024.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
Let’s kick off our report with a glance at how sales stack up against previous months. Examining daily sales data from the start of the year, there’s not much deviation over these past three months. While March does show a slight dip compared to February, it’s a marginal decrease – just 1%.
March hasn’t seen any significant spikes or drops in sales. Despite International Women’s Day on March 8, there hasn’t been a notable impact on overall platform sales, mirroring our observations from February 14 in our last report. The graph illustrates the typical subtle upticks in sales over the weekend.
What’s intriguing is that the strongest and weakest sales days for the first quarter of 2024 both fall in March – specifically, March 3 and March 31, respectively. However, March 31 coincided with Easter, the most significant Christian holiday, not a prime time for online shopping. We’ve noticed a similar pattern around the Christmas season.
Sales on Etsy by category in March
This month, there are notable variations in sales across different categories. Roughly half of them show a decline compared to February, while the other half indicate growth. The steepest drop is seen in the Paper & Party Supplies and Art & Collectibles categories, with decreases of 8% and 6% respectively. On the flip side, sellers in the Shoes and Weddings categories are experiencing even more significant growth, with increases of 11% and 9% respectively.
Looking ahead, the upcoming months are poised to be particularly lucrative for the Weddings category, with summer weddings on the horizon. If any of your products could be seen as wedding-related (such as jewelry, guest gifts, table decorations, or various design elements), optimizing for this trend could be highly beneficial.

Sales on Etsy by country in March
Examining March sales in the USA, we notice a slight dip below the platform’s average, yet the overall trends remain consistent (including the strongest and weakest days of the quarter). Similar patterns emerge for sales from the UK, albeit with a decline of just over 5% this month, marking the largest drop among the top 10 selling countries on Etsy.
China boasts the most significant growth, nearing 10%. However, they also experienced a comparable decline last month. Despite this, China’s sales chart exudes a more optimistic outlook compared to Australia. For the third consecutive month, Australian sellers have witnessed a decline in sales compared to the previous month, although this time, the decrease is a mere 2.5%.
Country | January | February | March |
United States | -33.15% | -0.81% | -0.61% |
United Kingdom | -37.56% | 2.21% | -5.12% |
Canada | -19.89% | -5.79% | -1.77% |
Germany | -29.53% | 2.83% | 3.77% |
Australia | -17.72% | -6.60% | -2.57% |
China | 6.05% | -9.86% | 9.57% |
France | -33.74% | 6.51% | -1.79% |
Ukraine | -15.42% | 2.89% | 3.75% |
Turkey | -28.10% | 2.03% | -1.22% |
India | -5.82% | 4.23% | 2.84% |
In the sales charts from Germany and France, we observe a noteworthy shift: the first Sunday (March 3rd) isn’t the peak sales day for the month; it’s the subsequent Sunday, March 10th. Moreover, while there’s a marked drop in sales around Easter for the platform and German stores, this trend isn’t mirrored among French sellers.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in March
In March, the count of new shops opening on Etsy decreased by nearly 30,000 compared to February, totaling 150,288. This trend is expected to persist in the coming months. Notably, Etsy announced the introduction of a shop set-up fee aimed at bolstering security and verification. Under this initiative, some new shops will pay a one-time set-up fee of $15 before commencing business.
Many sellers view this measure positively. A $15 fee isn’t a significant barrier for aspiring Etsy entrepreneurs. However, it may deter questionable practices, such as repeatedly opening new shops following the closure of previous ones due to policy violations.
