Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for August 2022.
Table of Contents
Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
The positive trend of increasing daily sales that we noticed at the end of July has continued and has even accelerated in August. As apparent from the graph below, the sales have been steadily growing over the entire month. This gives us hope that the trend will continue in September as well.
On a monthly basis, August is the first month of 2022 in which we can see an increase compared to the previous month. Up to June, the average daily sales for the month were decreasing by 4-5%. In August, the sales are 7% up compared to July and have almost reached the levels from April.
Sales on Etsy by category in August
The sales growth is visible in almost all Etsy categories.
The hike is most noticeable in Clothing (14%), Art & Collectibles (13%), Books, Movies & Music (11%), and Accessories (9%). For Craft Supplies & Tools, Electronics & Accessories, and Toys & Games the increase compared to July is about 7%. The only category which registers a decrease in Shoes (-2%). Even though the summer is almost over, we can see that even the sales in the Weddings category have increased (2%).
Sales on Etsy by country in August
As always, the sales in the US are strongly correlated with the overall trend in Etsy. Actually, it is more accurate to say that the US sales are driving the overall Etsy trend since the American shops are about 62% of all. The sales from the US in August are 10% more compared to July.
The UK is one of the few major Etsy countries in which the sales are following a downward trend. Shops from the UK sold 3% fewer items in August compared to July. British sellers shouldn’t get too discouraged, though. The last few days of August show a hike in sales. This gives hope that the negative trend will reverse in September.
The sales from the shops from Australia continue their steady growth too. For a second month in a row, the sales from Australia have increased by 10% on a monthly basis. Currently, the sales have reached the levels from February 2022.
For the first time this year, we can also see a hike in sales from Canada. The increase there is 5%.
August turned out to be a great month for Turkey too, as the monthly sales have increased by 11%. This makes August the strongest month for Turkey since the beginning of 2022.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in August
148,182 shops were registered on Etsy in August.

Holidays
As expected, the holidays in August didn’t have any noticeable influence on the sales in any of the related countries. The only holiday which is worth mentioning in September is Labor Day in the US. Many sellers run sales for the occasion and it will be curious to see if this will really motivate the customers to buy more.
Don’t forget that September 22 is the fall equinox. It is doubtful that this date will bring you more sales, however, it is a good reminder that the summer is over and the winter months are coming. Even though it is still sunny in September, people have already started their winter shopping. Now is a good time to start working on your winter listings.
