Etsy Sales Report – February 2023

Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for February 2023.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months

In our previous report, we presented sales statistics for Etsy for the first month of the 2023. While the numbers in this report appeared relatively modest, it’s important to note that we were comparing them to the previous two months, which are typically the platform’s busiest. In February, the sales trends on Etsy remained consistent with what we observed in January.

Upon reviewing the data, it’s evident that in February there were no significant fluctuations in sales, with no notable spikes or dips. The graph shows a slight decline in sales during the first half of the month, followed by a modest uptick in the second half.

This year’s sales figures reveal that Valentine’s Day did not live up to expectations for generating significant increases in sales. In fact, the two weeks leading up to the holiday saw a decline in sales overall. However, it’s worth noting that certain products experienced spikes in sales during this period. If your store offers products that would make suitable Valentine’s Day gifts, it’s a good idea to optimize your listings in advance by updating relevant tags and descriptions. While you may see a boost in sales for these products, it’s important to keep in mind that overall platform sales are unlikely to double or reach peak levels outside of the holiday season in November and December.

If we compare sales in February with those in January, we will see that there is almost no difference. The numbers show a decrease of less than 1% in sales for the platform as a whole in February compared to the previous month. Additionally, the February sales are almost identical to those in September.

Sales on Etsy by category in February

Looking at the data by category has always been an important part of our monthly reports. Often the statistics by category look quite different from the overall trends for the month. However, this is not the case in February.

In all categories, we see a better first half of the month and weakest days around the middle of February. The days between February 13th and 18th are weaker than the average for the month for all categories. In almost all categories, the last few days of the month have sales at levels as in the beginning of the month.

Compared to the average daily sales in January, there are no major deviations in almost any of the categories in February. In most cases, the differences are up to 5%. Exceptions are Books, Movies & Music, Electronics & Accessories, and Pet Supplies categories, where the decline compared to January is 20%, 9%, and 7%, respectively. There are only 4 categories where there is an increase (albeit minimal) compared to January – Art & Collectibles (2%), Clothing (1%), Craft Supplies & Tools (1%), and Weddings (2%).

Sales on Etsy by country in February

Sales from US shops, as always, follow the overall trends we discussed at the beginning of the report. The data for the UK shops show the same overall trend, but with a 3% growth compared to January.

Australian and Canadian shops have sold just over 6% fewer products compared to January, which is over 4 times more than the platform average. The decline is even greater for shops in Turkey – at around 7%.

Newly opened shops on Etsy in February

186,859 new shops were registered on Etsy in February. Compared to the impressive 250,000+ new registrations in January, this is significantly less. Nonetheless, Etsy is obviously continuing to attract more and more sellers.

Holidays

In March the focus is on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). We will be monitoring whether this will have any significant impact on sales on Etsy. You still have time to consider whether any of your products may be of interest to buyers for this holiday, such as green clothing or accessories. Also, Easter is almost here. It’s time to prepare your products, both as models and SEO, to make them competitive and reach as many potential buyers as possible. This always requires time and effort, but it’s worth it. Especially if you sell decorations, don’t miss this opportunity of the year.
