Each month we will be publishing on the Koalanda blog a brief report on the Etsy sales of the preceding month. Here is the report for September 2024.

Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
Sales in September remained almost identical to those in August. Looking at the exact figures, there was a minimal decline of just 0.13%. Essentially, the average daily sales in September were nearly the same as in the previous month. This doesn’t indicate any significant drop. However, we also didn’t see the growth we had been anticipating. Perhaps in the coming month, we’ll finally witness a real increase in sales.
That said, it’s important to highlight that the strongest sales days for Etsy sellers over the past three months occurred in September. The standout day was September 2nd, which, as shown clearly on the graph, had the highest sales for the entire quarter.
Sales on Etsy by category in September
Let’s take a look at how sales are performing across different categories. A general overview shows that while half of the categories experienced a decline, the other half saw growth compared to August.
The smallest change occurred in the Shoes category, where sales remained almost flat, with a slight increase of just over 0.1%, which is roughly in line with the platform’s average.
The largest drop was seen in the Wedding category, with a 7% decline (which is expected, as colder months aren’t peak season for weddings and related products). Significant decreases were also noted in Electronics & Accessories (5.8%), Bags & Purses (5.7%), and Jewelry (5%).
On the other hand, the category with the most notable growth was Pet Supplies, where sales in September were up by more than 6% compared to August. The top-selling category on the platform—Craft Supplies & Tools—also saw a positive shift, with sales growing by around 3%. Clothing sales followed closely, with a 2.7% increase.

Sales on Etsy by country in September
In the table showing the sales trends for the top 10 countries on Etsy, this month appears much calmer. There are no double-digit increases or decreases compared to the previous month.
Country | July | August | September |
United States | -0.62% | 9.97% | -0.80% |
United Kingdom | -5.88% | -2.07% | -0.50% |
Canada | -0.28% | -7.70% | 1.67% |
Germany | -1.47% | -3.25% | -1.35% |
Australia | 3.00% | 11.74% | -4.44% |
China | 3.45% | 5.11% | 5.11% |
France | -19.82% | 0.43% | 0.33% |
Ukraine | 2.25% | 11.07% | 5.92% |
Türkiye | 0.14% | 7.25% | 0.77% |
India | 9.44% | 2.36% | -3.15% |
Half of the observed countries showed slight growth, while the other half experienced a small decline. In several cases, the changes were minimal, with both increases and decreases staying below 1% (in the USA, UK, France, and Turkey).
The only significant growth, over 5%, was seen in shops from China (5.11%, matching the growth from the previous month) and Ukraine (5.92%, though down from the 11% growth last month).
The largest decline was recorded in Australian shops, where sales dropped by 4.44% in September compared to August. However, it’s worth noting that Australian sellers had the highest growth last month, so this decrease is less impactful when viewed over a longer period.
The sales graph for France and India once again highlights the competition between the two countries in terms of daily sales volume. It looks like French sellers might have a chance to reclaim a higher position in the rankings for daily Etsy sales.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in September
In September, the number of new Etsy shops was slightly lower than in the previous month, with 108,899 new stores—around 3,500 fewer than in August. However, with over 100,000 new sellers joining Etsy every month, all vying for buyers’ attention, don’t be fooled into thinking the market is any less competitive than before.

Holidays
With Halloween approaching fast, many sellers might feel like they’ve missed their window of opportunity, but there’s still plenty of time to gear up for the biggest sales season of the year. Black Friday and Christmas are right around the corner, and November and December are the prime months for Etsy buyers. These two months represent a massive opportunity to capture the attention of holiday shoppers, but don’t overlook the importance of prepping now to stay ahead of the competition.
Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, November 28 this year in the U.S., can still be a valuable sales driver, especially for home décor, kitchenware, and hosting essentials. Many buyers are looking for unique items to enhance their Thanksgiving celebrations, whether it’s table settings, custom decorations, or thoughtful hostess gifts. By offering Thanksgiving-themed products or catering to this market, you can tap into the holiday spirit and boost sales even before Black Friday hits.
