Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
In last month’s report, we shared our expectations for October sales to start picking up, based on patterns we’ve observed over the past few years. Last year, both September and October saw sales growth on Etsy—almost like a warm-up for the big Black Friday and holiday season in November and December. Unfortunately, this year, the upward trend hasn’t been as strong.
In September, we experienced a slight dip in sales, with numbers nearly identical to those in August. Now, instead of seeing growth in October, we’re noticing a further decline compared to September, with sales down by almost 2%. While this isn’t a dramatic drop, it’s still notable, especially in months we typically expect to perform better.
That said, we remain hopeful. Just as October brought an unexpected decline, November could surprise us with a recovery that balances things out. If we look at the daily sales graph over the last three months, there are no major declines, which gives us reason to stay optimistic.
Sales on Etsy by category in October
Across categories, the numbers fell short of the Koalanda team’s expectations and the hopes of sellers. Only three categories saw higher sales in October compared to September: Books, Movies & Music (0.7%), Home & Living (2.4%), and Toys & Games (2%).
The remaining 12 categories reported a decline. In some, the decrease was minimal—under 1%—such as in Bath & Beauty and Craft Supplies & Tools. However, other categories experienced more notable drops. The largest decline was in Weddings, down nearly 15%, which is understandable given that winter isn’t peak wedding season. Other significant decreases were seen in Electronics & Accessories (6.9%), Jewelry (5.9%), Shoes (5.7%), and Pet Supplies (4.8%).

Sales on Etsy by country in October
In October, four of the top-selling countries on Etsy saw a decline in sales, including the United States, which has the largest share of sales on the platform. For each of these countries—USA, China, France, and India—the drop was around 4%. On the three-month sales graphs, this decline doesn’t appear dramatic and is even hard to spot at a glance.
The strongest growth came from the United Kingdom, with sales up by 3.4%. Australia followed with an increase of around 2.5% (notably, Australian shops had the largest decline last month). For other countries, growth was between 1–2%.

Newly opened shops on Etsy in October
October also saw a slight drop in new shop openings compared to September, with around 1,000 fewer shops registered, totaling 107,950 new shops on the platform.
