Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
This month, we’re kicking off the report with some fantastic news. Etsy’s sales have once again outperformed the previous month. With the platform’s peak months still on the horizon, we can take comfort in knowing that the slowest months of the year are behind us, and sales are poised for growth. In fact, August saw an overall increase of over 6% compared to July, which is more than three times the growth of the preceding month.
Furthermore, the daily average sales on Etsy for August have already reached levels not seen since April of this year. Check out the graph below for a visual representation of Etsy’s sales performance over the past six months.
Sales on Etsy by category in August
When we look at the sales data on Etsy for August for different categories, we notice that in over half of these categories, there’s an increase in sales compared to July. The most substantial growth is observed in the “Clothing” category, where sales have surged by 11%. Noteworthy but still under 10% increases are seen in the categories of “Art & Collectibles” (8%), “Accessories” (5%), and “Books, Movies & Music” (5%).
On the flip side, a decline in sales is evident in 5 of the categories. However, even in those with the most significant decreases, like “Shoes” and “Bags & Purses,” the drop doesn’t surpass 2%. Hence, it’s challenging to label it as a substantial decline in any of these categories.

Sales on Etsy by country in August
We’re witnessing growth in sales across nearly all of Etsy’s top 10 countries this month.

The UK, however, stands out with a slight decrease of just over 3% compared to July, along with Germany. In contrast, the USA is showing robust growth, exceeding 9%. This remarkable surge is clearly depicted in the graph below.
On the graph below, we’ve compared shop sales in France to those in Australia over the past 3 months, revealing distinctive trends. French shops experienced a considerable dip in July and, unfortunately, couldn’t rebound in August, remaining at similar levels. In contrast, Australian shops are celebrating the platform’s most substantial growth this month, surpassing 14%.
Germany has seen a decline of around 2.5%. It’s essential to note, however, that the previous month saw German shops with a remarkable growth rate of over 10%. In contrast to Germany, Canadian shop sales have increased over the past month, as evident on the graph (9%). While there are days when Canadian sales surpass Germany’s, the average daily sales for the month in Germany still hold the lead.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in August
In August, 212,373 new shops joined Etsy, marking a decrease of around 7% compared to the new shops that opened in July.
