Sales on Etsy in comparison with previous months
For the third month in a row, our Etsy sales report starts with some good news. Once again, we observe an increase in sales on the platform compared to the previous month. Sales in September grew by 4% compared to August, slightly less than the 6% increase from the previous month, but it still shows a steady upward trend. This is expected as we approach the strongest months for Etsy sellers – November and December.
The chart below illustrates Etsy sales over the past three months. Notably, it shows a consistent upward trend in sales, with a remarkable surge in September. This increase coincides with the GET5 promotion that Etsy ran on September 16th and 17th, where they offered a $5 discount on eligible buyer orders over the weekend. If you’ve ever wondered whether these types of promotions are effective, the data makes it clear that they indeed produce positive results.
Sales on Etsy by category in September
Sales are up in over half of the categories compared to August. However, some categories saw exceptions with lower sales, including Art & Collectibles (-2%), Bags & Purses (-6%), Electronics & Accessories (-7%), Paper & Party Supplies (-3%), Shoes (-2%), and Weddings (-8%). It’s not surprising that the Weddings category experienced a decline as the wedding season has ended, and winter sales are typically slower for wedding-related items.
The categories experiencing the most substantial sales growth include Pet Supplies (10%), Bath & Beauty (9%), and Clothing (7%). The graph below illustrates how, in certain categories, September sales are now either on par with or even exceeding those of April this year, notably Clothing and Craft Supplies & Tools.

Sales on Etsy by country in September
We’re witnessing growth in sales across nearly all of Etsy’s top 10 countries this month.

In 8 out of the top 10 countries for Etsy sales, we see an increase in September compared to August. Germany is the only exception, with a nearly 4% decline, and Australia, which experienced a minimal drop of around 0.5%.
The chart below indicates that Australian sellers didn’t fully capitalize on Etsy’s promotion around September 17th.
This month, we don’t see substantial percentage increases like those in previous months. Among the ten countries we examined for September, the most significant sales growth is in Turkey, Canada, and the UK, each experiencing an approximate 6% increase.
Sales growth for stores in the USA is slightly below 4%. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember the substantial increase observed in the previous month, which is clearly visible in the chart. The trend is undoubtedly heading in a positive direction.
Newly opened shops on Etsy in September
In August, around 6% fewer new Etsy shops, about 199,977, were registered compared to those opened in July.
